When I would open & close the lid, the monitor would stay black for 3 - 10 seconds and flicker 3 - 5 times before the image would stay. This started the first day and progressively got worse. I had turned off all monitor and hard drive power settings (no sleep mode, hibernation, etc)., and checked to ensure all drivers (video, bios, etc) were up-to-date. With all software up-to-date, I then knew it was a hardware issues. I called HP and tech support who agreed it was a hardware issue and offered to repair it for free as it was 4 days old. I told them "no" and am returning it. Also, the DVD drive would start for no reason and the function keys didn't always work. The sound key and monitor brightness keys sometimes took multiple hits to work.

Edited on September 5....HP tech support has been nothing but fantastic. They bumped my call up to next level support and then emailed me and called me. I informed them of what fixes I tried, how they didn't work and it is a hardware issue, and I am just going to return it. They provided me with a coupon for an HP Store purchase for my troubles and hoped I would buy a HP again. They went out of their to try to make me happy (I wasn't upset, I understand that hardware issues will happen).

Got the computer in a timely mannor, thanks Amazon. Got it up and running, I was excited to try Windows 8. I was taking the leap. I like Windows 8 and after 5 minutes of getting used to the new interface it was working fine for me. We did buy this computer for our 14yr son and so it was his turn to have some fun. It worked well, very fast. Then day 2. He was playing his favorite game, and called me over because the computer was frozen. Could not do anything with it. Hard boot. No good. Used the "one key recovery" feature, to roll back to original settings. Came back up for a bit then, would not load Windows any more at all. Talked to the nice lady at Lenovo and she offered to send factory recovery disks at no charge. I will update this when we try to recover. Great computer, no so sure about the software, may need a few updates before Win 8 is perfect.

Update Dec 20th : Lenovo sent recovery disks. Attempted recovery with Lenovo on the phone to guide me. Did not work, the computer is going back to be repaired. Not too happy now, but cannot complain about the service, it was fine. I hope the machine works properly when it gets back, will update.

Update Jan 17th : Still waiting. They are replaceing the motherboard and do not have the correct one in stock at the repair center it is at, so they say, must come from China or something, not a very happy customer at this point.

Update Jan 29th : Lenovo is now not the company I would recomend

Update Feb 16th : Finally have the computer back. It is running well. Lennovo support was terrible giving mis-information and outright lies were told to us. According to the "Lenovo Depot Repair Center Repair Action Report" that came back with the machine, the repair was replace hard drive. The telephone support told us that the motherboard needed to be replaced and it was not available and that is why the repair was taking over 5 weeks. If it was jus t a HDD replacement it should have taken no time at all. There is no problem finding a HDD at a repair depot I would hope. I am a very unhappy customer Lenovo. I hope that some people will think twice about buying any product from you. As a small business owner, if something this bad happened, I would bend over backward to make sure my customer was happy in the end. No such thing with Lenovo. I asked maybe if they could put in an extra 4GB of ram to help make up for my inconvience, no reply. The only thing that really surprised me was that we actually got our computer back. Lenovo you need to seriously look at how you treat your customers.

Pros:
- Very nice design, sleek and elegant (similar to macbook air)
- Light and portable
- Runs pretty smoothly, i.e. no lagging or delay when opening and running programs (from what I could tell during my short ownership)

Cons:
- Mine would overheat and crash, and became too hot to touch on the bottom side near the back. This made the laptop pretty useless, and I had to return it for a refund.
- Lots of bloatware (i.e. useless, pre-installed software). Just annoying to uninstall it.
- Ships with a recovery CD, despite the lack of CD drive on the laptop. You'll need an external CD drive, or be able to copy the CD contents to a bootable USB flash drive.

Important note: I strongly encourage anyone who still decides to buy this laptop (after all, mine might've been a single case of overheating) to first do a complete re-installation of Windows using the CD (or some other form of "stress testing") just to see if it can make it through the process. Mine couldn't, it would overheat during the process and crash. The last thing you want is to use it lightly for a few months, only to later find out it overheats during longer, more intense use. Try to test out everything on any new laptop you buy.

By some EE guy

My criteria for the laptop I wanted involved a conflicting set of specifications, which resulted in few options. Till this very day, I have yet to find another laptop being sold which comes as closely to matching my criteria as this one. Basically, I wanted a powerful machine I could be productive on, which was simultaneously light enough to carry around (and pretty enough to look at). After first buying a Dell XPS15 (L521x), and later deciding to return it, I have been very pleased with this laptop, especially after installing a SSD (Crucial M4 256GB, btw).

Pros:
Display quality - At 1080p, of the IPS sort, there's almost nothing negative that can be said about this display. Some users have noted that the reds appear orangish, but for me it wasn't noticeable. I may have been either lucky or this just wasn't high on my priority list. The colors are vivid and the viewing angles are spectacular - comparable to my Thinkpad X61 Tablet, which also had a high resolution IPS display. 1080p set the real bargains apart from the phonies (aka most ultrabooks and their pathetic weaksauce resolutions).

Dedicated graphics - GeForce GT 640m 1GB. While it uses the slower VDDR3, but gaming on this laptop (I play SC2) has been no problem for me. In addition, there is a bios mod floating around which doubles the speed of the GPU (from 500MHz to 900MHz, with no increase in temps or voltage), though the actual performance difference was not noticeable to me.

Backlit keyboard with numpad - I felt that the numpad was one of those infrequently used, but very necessary when needed devices, and this laptop comes with one. It was perhaps the largest factor in weeding out most laptop candidates from my consideration (judge me if you want). The keys are chicklet style, which was a first for me. Adapting to it wasn't that big of a deal.

Size and Weight - this is just about the lightest and thinnest laptop that had all three of the previous criteria. It is 4.4lbs and less than an inch thick. Previously, the Dell XPS15 was also less than an inch thick, but was 5.7lbs or more. In addition, the viewing angles on the Dell was quite a bit poorer.

Accessibility and Upgradability - the battery, hard drive, and one stick of RAM are easily accessed. This made it very convenient to upgrade to an SSD and to slap more memory in. Same thing can't be said about most ultrabooks. Ultrabooks = 150% marketing - 50% quality

Cons:
Battery life - this is the biggest deficiency for this laptop. I would have preferred it to be 5+ hours, but at <4 hours, it's ok, but not great. Had there been another laptop with all of the above with a longer battery life, then I may have gotten it. But, there wasn't.

Build quality - as most reviewers have noted, there is some flex in some areas like the screen and the keyboard. In comparison, the Dell was solid. It was a solid block of aluminium. However, I have never had a laptop go bad on me before (and I've owned more than 10 in the past), so I'm fairly confident that I can keep this laptop from breaking. However, this laptop does seem quite delicate. It's definitely not made from Thinkpad stuff, though the Thinkpad soft surface scratches easily.

Other:
Aesthetics - the design of the laptop is very nice. That's all there is to it. Sony is always good at looking good, but in the past they were charging too much for shoddy stuff. For this laptop, though, it seems to be quite a bargain. If there was something I needed to gripe about, it would be that the one I got (black) has a rather rough finish, compared to the silver.

Bonus software - now I wasn't expecting this. In the past, I would always do a fresh re-install of my computer as soon as I got it to rid myself of the bloatware. But, I kept the software for the Thinkpad, and have done the same for this laptop. It's not bad. What really surprised me was that Sony had preinstalled a "Inspiration Suite" software package that included audio and video editors. I just spent the last few days playing with it, and looking up the prices, it's around $100 of free, useful software.

As I surveyed the scene, I was primarily shocked that Sony was the only vendor that provided me a product for all my needs at a reasonable and affordable price (I got the whole thing Open Box for less than $1k - including the SSD, but even at $1k, it's still good). Sony used to be associated with charging a premium for the brand name, but it seems that with the way things have gone, they are getting more competitive again.

Edit: this laptop seems to be the updated version for Windows 8. I had gotten the Windows 7 version. It seems not much has changed, but the bios mod doesn't seem to work with the Windows 8 version. Another thing about Sony is that they like to lock things down. Another reason I have not liked buying their stuff. Guess I got lucky with this purchase which they just happened to leave the bios available for tinkering.

I got this to replace my desktop that I just sold as I'll be needing a more portable solution for classes.

Upon arrival and initially removing it from the box I noticed that the back plate was improperly fitted. You heard me, there are 3 prongs that hold it in place. 2 of them weren't in their respective location and it was just hanging. I had to unscrew it, remove it, and put it back on for it to function normally. Yeah, that's a pretty bad scare for a "new" product. I highly doubt the product I received was new like advertised. There are scuff marks at some locations(by the webcam for one).

As for the pros and cons, here they are.

Pros:
- Affordable
- Best Bang for your Buck
- Sleek and Stylish

Cons:
- Heating Issues(where I rest my right palm it gets to near scalding and where I place my hand for moving the mouse the exhaust is poorly placed and pumps hot air on my hand)
- Bad Screen (colors are to whited out and bright!)
- Weird Touchpad, no hardware disable button.
- Speakers aren't worth anything

Conclusion:
If you're looking for an affordable laptop for gaming consider another brand. The 670m in this one isn't worth the tradeoff for getting a high quality product.

Other Opinion

By Mike C.

I purchased this phone about a year ago and was initially ecstatic about the device's features as well as the intuitiveness of the Android platform itself. However, at the release of this device the Android platform was still growing and functioned in a much less advanced capacity than it currently does. Through several updates of core firmware, as well as various software updates to apps, the phone has become sluggish and often unresponsive.

Long story short, the hardware hasn't kept up with the every-growing demands on the software front. The Android Marketplace offers a great breadth of content that is simply impractical to run on this outdated hardware. If you're looking to have a phone that keeps up with current technological trends, think twice before investing in this sucker.

Also, battery life tends to become absolutely abysmal after the first 6-8 months or so, so definitely think about investing in some backup batteries.

By Choice

With respect to design, form factor, weight, and the number of ports, this computer is excellent. Very easy to carry and has enough ports for everyday use. But when it comes to performance, the computer stutters and exhibits very irritating lag. It is slow and very weak in its ability to multitask. As much as I like aesthetics, it's hard for me to rate this computer high when it fumbles on the most important reason for buying a computer. There is really not much to right home about when it comes to performance. And of course I am not referring to any heavy duty task - just basic task of browsing, checking e-mails, using Facebook, etc. Performance must come first before beauty.

We purchased an Asus laptop (ModelX54C-BBK24) three months ago from Best Buy for a business project, along with a Geek Squad service contract, and are seriously dissatisfied with the results. About two months after the purchase, the computer stopped working. We took it into Best Buy for diagnosis and repair. The Geek Squad determined that the problem was a defective hard drive and its replacement was covered under Asus's warranty. We were informed, however, that we needed to provide "recovery discs" that would allow the hard drive to accept an operating system so that the computer would be operational; without these discs the computer, even with a new hard drive, would not work. Although Best Buy is an authorized service provider for Asus products, we were told that they had no access to Asus recovery discs, and it was our responsibility to provide them.

Inasmuch as we had not created these discs, an oversight on our part that does not void any explicit or implicit warranties (it is reasonable expectation on our part that a newly purchased computer will work longer than two months), or give excuse to Asus for manufacturing a shoddy product, it was necessary to contact Asus. We did so, and Asus was willing to sell us these necessary recovery discs for fifty dollars. So, to rectify their inability to manufacture a serviceable product, we were expected to pay approximately twenty percent of our purchase price to remedy Asus's manufacturing incompetence. In our view, this was an outrageous demand, an effort by Asus to turn their shoddy quality control into a profit center at our expense.

We contacted Asus Customer Support and for three days worth of telephone calls received apologies and excuses from representatives and supervisors; all were terribly sorry about the inconvenience, etc., ad infinitum, ad nauseum, but showed no real effort on Asus's part to make good on their defective product, save for an offer to subtract $12.50 from the purchase price of the recovery discs. A mean spirited offer that we refused. In effect, unless we pay Asus a fee to rebuild our newly purchased computer, their corporate policies will effectively prevent us from using our property. Not a nice alternative and a terrible corporate policy that looks to avoid responsibility for the poor quality of their product, and demeans their customers by forcing them to subsidize Asus's corporate ineptitude, manufacturing incompetence and indifference to customer satisfaction.

We will never again buy an Asus computer and would advise other consumers to consider striking Asus products from any purchasing consideration. For our part, we will be filing a complaint against Asus with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office.

Ok lets break this laptop down and help you find out if you should buy this laptop.

Product Features

Intel Core i3-2350M Processor 2.3GHz
6GB DIMM RAM
500GB 5400RPM Hard Drive

Note: I3 processor at this price is not a good deal even with 6gb of RAM (4gb is what avg users use). The 5400rpm hard drive doesn't justify the price either.

14-Inch Screen, Intel HD Graphics 3000
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Note: 14 inches is a sweet spot between portability and screen size, but you will see that this laptop comes in at about 6.57lbs. Pretty heavy for a 14inch.

USB 2.0 Ports: 1
USB 3.0 Ports: 2

Note: this is good but an extra one would be better.

Battery Type: Nonstandard Battery (6-cell battery)
Wireless Type: 802.11bgn

Note: Wireless is standard. The battery...you can expect about 3-4 hours with normal usage.

Other:
Chiclet-style keyboard
Touchpad with integrated scrolling and gestures
VGA Output (Connect to another monitor or TV, non HD)

This is entry level to getting your feet wet with a laptop. For a first time laptop user that does not go with a Netbook, this is ok, but for about 50 to 100 dollars more you would get a much better laptop for your money.Ok lets break this laptop down and help you find out if you should buy this laptop.

It is tough to say whether the problem is with the new Windows 8 or with the laptop, or how they interact. But. I have never ever had a laptop that was this broken right out of the bag. Constant system crashes, apps don't work, the mouse locks up, applications like firefox lock up for extended periods. Keep in mind, this is brand new, so the problem isn't a virus or system bloat. The laptop and OS arrive broken and incredibly slow.

I loved this computer. After doing lots of research looking for a computer to suit my needs I settled for the Sony Vaio E series. The keyboard is phenomenal - Beautiful backlighting (a novelty to me), no keyboard flex (great because I type frequently and quickly), and the keys themselves were awesome. The screen was very bright - An all around very attractive computer. Startup time was also great... UNTIL:
Within 24 hours of having this computer I started noticing glitches within the mousepad. Very frustrating. Also, after stalling Windows 8 "updates" my computer completely crashed. I spent 2 hours on the phone with tech support while my brand new PC had to completely reset. Needless to say it was a nightmare. It just froze on the start screen and wouldn't work even after restarting!

Finally, though I realize this is not Sony's fault -- My initial excitement was detracted by the fact that I soon noticed there was a small, but undoubtedly worsening crack in the plastic material surrounding the black trim of the computer. There were actually some wires exposed. Also, upon arrival the keyboard was popped out of place - While this is insignificant because ultimately the keyboard was fine, it is extremely frustrating that Amazon ships their products in these states.

Ultimately, I wish Sony should have kept their Windows 7 E series around a little longer.. Definitely avoid..

The good
-Performance: with 6GB of RAM and a Core i-5, this computer's performance is solid for an ultrabook. It operates very smoothly.
-Windows 8: It takes a only couple days to get used to. Once you have a grasp on it, it's a very user-friendly OS.
-Weight: good for having a 14 inch screen

The bad
-Build quality: it feels fragile and cheaply built. The screen is shaky and you can feel the plastic case bend when you lift the laptop up with one hand; I don't imagine it would survive well if dropped.
-Speakers: God-awful. Laptop speakers are not supposed to be good, but these made my old Asus sound mind-blowing.

While the speakers are a major detail, I ultimately returned it because of the perceived build quality. Perhaps if you're not going to be moving around with it much at all, this comp might work for you. But if you're on the move, I would look for something with a more solid build.

If you want to play the latest games, then this is not the laptop for you. If you just play counter strike, league of legends or World of warcraft this one will do.

this laptop can handle games like:
League of Legends (Mid to high graphics)
WoW (Mid to high)
Aion (low to mid)
GTA IV (Low)
Need for Speed Most wanted 2 (Laggy even in low settings)

for everyday use this laptop is fast, and even has settings to make it even faster. It just have one hard disk bay, so if you are planning to install a SSD on this, buy a HDD enclosure. it has one 4 GB RAM stick and you can install another one because it has two RAM slots.

UPDATE 21/12/12

The screen looks bad compared to other screens with the same size and resolution, its kind of weird to say it but its true, the screen looks washed out or up-scaled from a lower resolution or something.

The black shiny part of the notebook gets scratches VERY easily. that was very annoying to me.
The samsung easy settings are very slow to open if you are not planning to buy an SSD, but that's the only slow thing in the laptop, so you can live with it.
It has lots of bloatware installed too.

THE SOUND is horrible. It has a sound quality comparable to cellphone speakers and no bass at all.

The battery is pretty decent. You can easily watch 5 or more hours of video in power saving mode.

Comfortable keyboard BUT when you type make sure to disable the mouse pad since you can easily touch it with your palm and the mouse can go everywhere and click on someting you don't want it to click on.

The mouse pad has gesture capabilities, but the gestures keep turning off. I had to go to mouse settings to disable and enable again the touch pad in order to turn it on again. I do this almost every day. Very annoying. I contacted samsung support center before i figured out how to fix it myself. they told me to completely reset the machine. I did it and the same story happens. I contacted them several other times for other concerns with no solutions. in other words the Samsung support center is USELESS.

It gets really hot while playing games while on my lap so i recommend using this laptop with a cooling pad and/or in a table.

The plastic body's silver paint get scratched very easily too.

Well. I'm kind of disappointed for all these things. if I were an average computer user I would have returned it long ago, but luckily I can fix my own problems with this laptop and I have no time or money to do that (I live overseas).

If you don't mind all these problems go ahead and buy it, but to be honest... all that headache doesn't worth 600 dollars (I bought it only because it was at 500 dollars before holidays). there are many other good alternatives to this one with the same specs and lower prices. you just have to search a little bit.

Overall, this laptop is pretty good. It's fast, quiet, and cool (even during a video encoding for 10 minutes with 100% CPU utilization).

I haven't found many pieces of software I'd call "crapware". I've only uninstalled Norton Security software.

The fingerprint processor is fast and very convenient.

The sound quality is wonderful: rich sound and very loud. I will not need external speakers even if I want to use the laptop for entertaining a small party of friends.

There's one thing I HATE: the damn touchpad doesn't process single taps well. It often ignores them and also jerks the mouse cursor around during the taps. I've recently updated the driver for it from the HP site, but that didn't fix the problem. I will report this to HP and will wait for a resolution.

Another thing that bothers me: this seems to be similar to what Aphex242 has reported here. I can't seem to have my older HP laptop and this one connect to my network wirelessly at the same without a period of time of disconnection. When one or another tries to connect to the router (CISCO), the one that was being connected loses its connection. And my Comcast modem loses its connection to the network. After 2 - 3 minutes, the connection gets restored, and both computers become able to be connected to the net.

I had high hopes for this laptop because of the glowing reviews, but I am tonight returning my second defective unit. The first one repeatedly shut down as I was trying to set it up for the first time. I could see no pattern to its spontaneous loss of power -- it would run for maybe five minutes and then go black. I assumed this was an isolated case and happily ordered a replacement.

The one I received tonight took me directly to the BIOS configuration screen each time I turned it on. Although I'm not familiar with how the configuration settings look on a working laptop of this model, I could see no evidence of a harddrive, so I'm thinking the drive was not properly connected. I never got into the operating system to begin setting up Windows.

I suspect both of these Samsung laptops may have been returned items. The packaging of the various components was not exactly pristine, so that's a little annoying. Anyway, I give up on this laptop, and I'm very dissappointed because it was a nice looking little machine and all the features I was looking for at a decent price. I'll hit my local Frys tomorrow and buy a laptop off the shelf.

Looks good, but then you turn it on and use it.
By Bchaseski (Northeast)

I purchased the Core i5 model with 500gb hard drive with touch. I've been using this Ultrabook for about a week and here are my observations. I'm a software developer and am used to very heavy 17" notebooks with quad-core processors, a dedicated video card, screaming SSD drives and tons of memory, so this is a huge departure from my 'norm'.

The size and weight are very good. Battery life seems to be just about at 5 hours with casual web surfing and a couple of 30 minute streaming videos from Hulu Plus. The processor (Core i5-xxxx) is fast and the combination of the mechanical 500GB hard drive and the 32gb SSD caching drive provide a fast experience. I looked into replacing both with a single 256GB SSD drive I had lying around and it is important to note that the 2.5" drive bay in this is the slim-height kind (7mm). I figured this would be the case so I'm not deducting any stars for that, but it is important to note in case you think you can upgrade it with any old SSD drive. That being said, it is going to cost about $200 more for a compatible SSD drive and that would bump the price up to what it would've cost for a core i7 model with 8gb of ram and a 256gb hard drive pre-installed. I definitely wish I had realized that first as I would've bought that model instead!

Screen is okay, definitely bright on the bright settings, however it is glossy and VERY REFLECTIVE. This is definitely a huge miss as my wife's Lenovo Twist has a great screen that is matte and way more effective to watch/use in any kind of lighting condition compared to my ultrabook. The resolution is the lowest resolution I've had in quite some time and I definitely can say I am missing 1920X 1080 resolution, however I'll get used to that and am not deducting any stars as I knew that when I ordered it. I installed Media Center into Windows 8 and hooked this up to a HD Homerun Prime (which is awesome!) and watching HD channels on this is nice, even on Wireless N. The glare however, is annoying in most lighting conditions.

Touchscreen is good, albeit finicky. I also own a Microsoft Surface that has a terrific touchscreen. The same applications, such as IE10 "metro", on the Surface work with all the gestures great. On the Sony, it sometimes takes many tries for the swipe down from the top of the screen to open the different tabs that are open or left-swipe in switches apps but doesn't go 'back' in the browser as easily as my Surface. I don't know if this can be corrected with any sensitivity settings as I haven't looked into that.

The keyboard is good. I type pretty quickly and the keys are spaced very well, have good travel, and keep up to my typing just fine. I don't really like the location of certain function keys like Delete, but that's something that I'll get used to as I use it more for development. At the price of >$800 I paid, I would've really liked a backlit keyboard, but I knew this when buying it so I'm not deducting any stars for lack thereof, however - hey Sony - start putting backlit keyboards on your ultrabooks!!!

The touchpad is quirky. I have read other reviews where this seems to be the case and I think I can adjust more settings but haven't go down that path yet as I'm trying to get used to 'what's there by default' before I make too many changes. On of the biggest annoyances is definitely that swiping anywhere close to the left-side of the touchpad will cycle through to the next application instead of moving my cursor to the right. I don't know that I want to turn that feature off and am trying my best to keep my fingers towards the middle of the touchpad when wanting to move the mouse instead of having a Windows 8 gesture take over. More on this to come when I get more used to the Sony.

FAN NOISE. This is a very common complaint everywhere on the web about these Ultrabooks. When I first unpackaged it and turned it on, the fan was screaming right away. Being that this is supposed to be a sleak & sexy ultrabook, I definitely have to deduct a bunch for this! I have a Dell Precision M6500 with a quad-core processor in it that doesn't make nearly this much noise from the multiple fans in it. Granted, it has more room for cooling in it, but Sony should've been able to figure out it's cooling/fan noise better with this. I really hope that in two years the fan doesn't burn out and I need to replace it! It seems to be on almost constantly.

Ports. This machine comes with 1 USB 3 and 1 USB 2 port on the left-hand side, which also is where the power core gets plugged in. It has a FULL sized HDMI port and D-sub port on the right, along with a gigabit network jack, SD slot (and memory stick pro), and a headset jack. I like the fact that I can use a regular HDMI cable to hook up to an external monitor or television instead of having to buy a special adapter for it. Kind of wish the D-Sub was a mini display port or mini hdmi or something more 'modern', but it is cool that you can just plug your old monitor into it without a need for another adapter.

Wireless. The wireless is a Atheros AR9485WB-EG adapter. This means that you cannot use some of the cool features of a core-i5 & Intel Display adapter. There is a cool technology called Intel WIDI which allows you to wireless display content from a machine that is compatible to your television. Unfortunately Sony didn't use a compatible Intel wireless adapter in this ultrabook so this isn't available without taking it apart and upgrading the wireless adapter. I assume this was done to keep the cost down. Wireless signal seems to be comparible with my other wireless devices throughout the household.

Overall, 3/5 stars. Some of the shortcomings I knew about prior to my purchase, others I learned when it arrived at my house. I would definitely return it if I could get a refund and search for another ultrabook that wasn't so half-baked, so be sure to read the return policy before you purchase this!!. Sony did a good job in design and aesthetics but missed on basics like an anti-glare screen and the fan constantly running. Some of the components used could've been better but they probably did this to keep the cost down so I can't take off stars for that.

It's light. It stays cool! It works faster than my Food Processor and it has Windows 8. I love this guy. I recently had another model in this line which I passed on to my granddaughter and thought I'd not find another one as good but I was wrong. This 14 inch has an I3 processor. Plenty of Ram and a large harddrive to store things. Windows 8 takes some getting used to but the startup and shutdown times will stun you on this new operating system.

I floundered around til my granddaughter took pity and showed me how to get to the desktop I was familiar with quickly and then I was unleashed. I'm actually getting used to the app start screen now and use it more and more, but that is turning this into a review of Windows 8 and this is about the laptop itself. This is also one of the few new models that has a removable battery so you can change them out if you're a constant user like me. A lot of the new ones are built in and when it's dead you gotta plug it in (make sure you check that). The touchpad is opened up a lot with this computer because of the Windows 8 and by that I mean it has a lot more functions than just point and tap. It's under four pounds with the battery in! The display is stunning for a 14 inch widescreen and the sound is very good for a laptop.

One of the best things about it that the HP maintenance software runs unobtrusively in the background and right off the bat my laptop had a problem with the fan suddenly spinning up quite audibly and locking the laptop up completely somehow until you had to reboot. This happened twice and I was about to throw the thing away when I did a third reboot and the laptop informed me that it was updating the bios and not to turn the power off. I was surprised at no popup informing me of the fact beforehand but I guess with the laptop frozen that would have been hard to do. At any rate the bios installed flawlessly and after the restart the laptop fan has never acted up again nor has the notebook frozen since. I can only surmise that HP was on top of the problem in hardware conflict or whatever it was and took steps to correct it immediately. Since we pay quite a bit for these toys I really appreciated that fact I can tell you.

The 4 gigs of ram and the 1.5ghtz processor make it sail along and the 500gb hard drive is more than adequate for my needs. The built in hi-def camera and software keeps you looking good in all kinds of light when skyping or whatever you do. The fact that it stays cool is really neat too and I can just lay it on my lap without any uncomfortable heat building up. All in all a great little machnine that does what it's supposed to. It does not come with a cd/dvd drive which seems to be the standard now. I guess everybody uses flash drives and external hard drives for storage of media etc now. It has an outlet for plugging it into your HD TV with hdmi outlet and you can watch videos (in true 1080p with surround sound (dolby dts etc) which surprised me again) and see pictures or listen to music etc. It holds it's charge for about 3 to 3 1/2 hours of constant use. It's also pretty tough and the hard drive has extra protection. I tend to drop them so that helps. With the windows 8 you have to add some software to do some things but that's easily done and available.

Overall I'd recommend it without hesitation. Especially after the hardware issue was self-resolved so quickly and efficiently!

i was so afraid at first being not able to find the right click button... well first of all there's none... but if you wanna access that you will use 2 finger tap... that's where you can find delete, rename, new folder, and some more of the commands on your right click window...

google chrome os operating system is totally different from windows vista,xp the 7 N D 8th... and i wouldn't compare it also to apple... they made chrome as should be a very simple operating system which, that if your used to using regular windows its would be a pain in the butt to start with... just like playing cassette tape and you are used to on using blue-ray with a remote control... it's really basic, maybe for some it would be nice but with a regular windows user in my opinion i rather spend another $150 to get a window base laptop...

settings... i love setting up my laptop or my desktop i always edit pictures and videos playing my music vids as mp3-mp4's and all of that...the windows media player is gone no vlc no gom players anymore it just have a download folder location using your hard drive and one local media player which (you cant play your playlist) just one song or video at a time... all your pictures music and videos will be all mixed up there in that download folder... not unless you will make an individual folder for them to organized it...and just a folder only no icons or other stuff to choose from...

another thing no java applet yet that supports chrome os... and i used java on one of my favorite site and i cant get it to function right without that java plug-ins and some more plug ins i came across with that it need it to be and cant find it yet... anyway 80% of the things i do online is well taking care of... like browsing the net facebooking youtubing online games or facebook games checking emails. all of that is no problem... and it did a great job on doing it and have that speed also... i think that's what really it design to do, just getting online...

now... lets talk about the better stuff...

Its cheap 200+ the 11.6 HD acer c7 chrome laptop is even cheaper than a 10.1'netbook.
ram is also up-gradable to up to 16gig but i wouldn't recommend it cause 2gig right now is working just fine... you got a 320 hardrive STORAGE compare to any tablet or other Samsung chrome os that has flash drive 8-16gig storage (which they said it runs 20% faster) "thats the down side of having hard drive compare to of having flash drive". the screen is nice and glossy and base on youtube reviews the screen is better than what samsung has... Its a dual core 1.1GHz speed honestly i dont have a problem streaming videos on it... a.k.a. netflix youtube and other video streaming site... not unless you are playing 1080p HD stuff... but lower than that i dont have any problem with it... remember DVD QUALITY videos is just 480p which for this size of screen 11.6' the 480p would look HD already...hehehe... so its still a winner choice... I also heard that it could work on ubuntu and or up-gradable to win-7 but that's a geek job already so im passing on that... and oh battery works only 3.5hrs as they said it is and if you are streaming or watching videos more often then probably it will go down to 2 - 2.5hrs battery life... And what can you loose on that? reg. laptops are like that... although it always better to have 4-7hrs of battery life... and i dont mind... there's always a power outlet on where im bringing this baby...

but still i'm going back to windows maybe after 6 months... but for now i'll give my self a chance to learn it more... im not worried much about the other settings or stuff i do off line, because i still got a nice desktop to work on... a.k.a editing videos and stuffs music and recordings...

From the very beginning started to have problems with the Internet connection. Sometimes it just disappears. It is not my wifi, because other two notebooks I have work perfectly well. Googled it and seems like a common problem on dell notebooks with Windows 7. I also find the touch-pad not very responsive: you have to hit it really hard in order to make a click. I tried to change that in the settings, but could not. Tried to contact the support service yesterday, but they were not very helpful. Very negative impressions so far. Stay away from it.

Update: the problem of internet connection was solved after contacting the support service. However, I still have problems with the touch pad. Although I managed to also solve the touch pad problem described above, it is still not very responsive and jittery. For some reason the clicklock or draglock (or I don't know what that function is called) activates by itself every time I start the machine. To deactivate it I just have to open and immediately close the mouse properties window. To avoid this problem I just use a regular mouse. I am also not very happy with the battery life. It doesn't last more than 3-4 hours with normal browsing.
